My email to Hawk and Owl Trust regarding Hen Harrier Brood Management

UncategorizedBy Neil-UKWildlifeMarch 11, 2015Leave a comment

Four weeks ago I was having a conversion on Twitter with the Hawk and Owl Trust, about their plans to help with the hen harrier brood management plan.  I asked specifically about the Chairman’s plans to start the management in spring when they had said they would not start until persecution stops.  Sadly they have…

Dunnocks

bird, Essex, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeFebruary 20, 2015Leave a comment

As I mentioned in my previous post I’ve spent some time photographing small birds on the ground. My main target was dunnocks. I was trying to get one in the sun with a clean background. This was half way there. But this one ticked both boxes!

Blue tit

bird, Essex, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeFebruary 19, 2015Leave a comment

Ive spent I few sunny days at the RSPB feeders at Wat Tyler CP, trying to get photos of the birds on the ground. Among the birds that came down were blue tits. I liked the pose of the blue tit having a look around A more typical pose. And one having a good look…

Backswimmer close up

Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, heteroptera, insect, wat tyler cp, water boatmanBy Neil-UKWildlifeFebruary 17, 2015Leave a comment

Last week I tried my new Pentax 1.4x Teleconvertor mounted on the 100mm macro with some extension tubes to see what the results were like. I tested it on a common greater water boatman or backswimmer (Notonecta glauca). These are the uncropped images, which show good detail at high magnification.

More of the Water rail

birdBy Neil-UKWildlifeFebruary 17, 2015Leave a comment

A week after my first visit to see the water rail I went back for another go. I got a nice one in the water But when it posed on some nice green vegetation, the shadow of someone standing behind me (I was laying down!) was cast in exactly the wrong place, again just as…

Back in November I visited Foxglove Covert Nature resrve in yorkshire and carried out some stream dipping.  Among what I found was this Polycleis felina flatworm Its a species usually found in streams, often under stones in faster flowing stretches. It can be recognised by the large number of eye spots bordering the head its…

Water Rail at Rainham Marshes

bird, Essex, RSPB Rainham, waterfowlBy Neil-UKWildlifeJanuary 28, 20151 Comment

There cant be many wildlife photographers in Essex that haven’t made a visit to RSPB Rainham Marshes in the last couple of weeks, where 2, 3 or 4 (depending who you ask!) water rails have been uncharacteristically showy for a usually reclusive bird. I made a visit a couple of Sundays ago and when it…

Well its taken longer than planned, but here is the best of my photos from July to December 2014 In July I had a close encounter with a giant horselfy Tabanus sp. Thankfully they are not usually interested in biting humans! I visited Thursley common on the way to New Forest and after disappointing amount…
