Greenshank in Puerto del Carmen

bird, Lanzarote, waderBy Neil-UKWildlifeDecember 4, 20111 Comment

As some of you have probably gathered from my recent posts, the beach at Puerto del Carmen was pretty good for co-operative waders.  On one morning I found a greenshank, who I managed to creep just close enough to for some nice photos. I got some ‘in the habitat’ shots, which show the volcanic rocks.…

I had to post this pic from Donna Nook today. Don’t worry its not stuck, just being curious. Taken with my new 35mm macro.

Stone Curlew on Lanzarote

LanzaroteBy Neil-UKWildlifeDecember 2, 20112 Comments

A quick photo, which sadly isn’t the best. When I was photographing the cattle egrets featured a couple of posts ago, I flushed a bird, which turned out to be a stone curlew, something I had always wanted to see. I was right near the Northern edge of Costa Teguise, which was a surprise as…

Gigrin Kites in dismal weather

bird, BOPBy Neil-UKWildlifeNovember 30, 20114 Comments

AFter my trip to Gilfach, I and some friends meet up at Gigrin farm. The weather did not look great and in fact only got more cloudy and darker as the red kite feeding time drew nearer and just sadly continued to get worse as they were fed. However having a camera with good High…

Gilfach Farm – salmon and waterfall

fish, landscapeBy Neil-UKWildlifeNovember 29, 2011Leave a comment

I had a trip to the Rhayader area of Wales over the weekend.  The first stop was Gilfach Farm where we waited for salmon to jump up the waterfall, but had no luck.  I did photograph the water fall though: Although we didn’t see them jumping, I did see 2 female salmon nest building, where…

Berthelots pipit

bird, Lanzarote, pipitBy Neil-UKWildlifeNovember 28, 2011Leave a comment

In the same area as the cattle egrets, I came across these Berthelot’s pipits. And some more on a lawn near a hotel in Costa Teguise.

Cattle egret

bird, heron, LanzaroteBy Neil-UKWildlifeNovember 24, 20111 Comment

When I was in Lanzarote on the outskirts of Costa Teguise I finally got a good view of a couple of cattle egrets. They were hunting for grasshoppers in the dry stony habitat that dominates the island.

Garden Chafer and Cardinal Beetle Pyrochroa coccinea

beetles, insectBy Neil-UKWildlifeNovember 22, 20112 Comments

Here are a couple from my trip to Goring back in May. I finally got a half decent pic of a garden chafer. I also found and photographed my first true cardinal beetle, seperated from the other Pyrochroa species by its black head.

Sanderlings and turnstones

On the same morning as the last post I came across a number of sanderlings. I got a close up. And various angles I also saw some turnstones

Trumpter finch and whimbrel

bird, finch, Lanzarote, waderBy Neil-UKWildlifeNovember 20, 2011Leave a comment

Some more shots on Lanzarote.  First thing almost every morning, as the sun came up, I headed down to the beach.  It was when the ebach was emptiest which meant not only was there more wildlife around, but it was also safer to be walking around with a long lense.  On this particular mornign I…
