Glow worm larva Lampyris noctiluca

While on the Forest School Course last weekend, a member of the group found a Glow worm (Lampyris noctiluca) larva, and he was christened Gary! I got some close ups. When it felt threatened he retracted his head, which at one point made me think it had been knocked off somehow! It would also adopted…

Wood ants

Last weekend I was on a Forest School Course with the excellent people at EarthcraftUK in Blean Woods. There are a number of wood ant nests in the area and in a lunch break I found a line of them heading up a tree, but it was midday and they were very active and very…

Grasshopper Warbler

On Tuesday I got word there was a grasshopper warbler about, but it took 3 attempts to hear and then finally see it, which was my first ever view of the species. I then staked it out yesterday evening, when the light was much poorer of course, and got a couple of OK grab shots…

Crested tit

The bird I was after at Loch Garten was a crested tit. My friend Ian was kind enough to lend me his 7D and 600mm prime lens to help me out! (see his and Paulines excellent images here: Pauline and Ian’s Zenfolio). With his help I managed a few shots, including this one. As you…

Robin

A quick shot from the Loch Garten feeders. I went all the way up to the Highlands of Scotland and photographed….a robin.

It looked so nice in the sun I couldn’t resist pressing the shutter!

Mountain Hares

When up in a Cairngorms I hoped to see Mountain Hares. I managed a few shots, and this was probably the best shot.
Mountain Hare Lepus timidus-5

I was expecting shots more like this!

I even had another one pose briefly by the road.

It moved off and poked its head over the snow.

First slow worms of the year

I found my first reptiles of the year this morning: some slow worms.

Slow worm Anguis fragilis

They were fairly sluggish, at least to start with, so I got a few shots of them before they slithered off.

Fraser’s bridge on Clunie Water, Glen Clunie

While driving through the Cairngorms we stopped at Fraser’s bridge on Clunie Water, Glen Clunie. The wonderful bridge was too nice to ignore, even to someone like me who doesn’t do much landscape photography (though I did have to clone out a street sign out of one of the photos). I also got a shot…
