Wildlife Photography in London

bird, crow, grebe, gull, heron, London, Regents Park, waterfowlBy Neil-UKWildlifeApril 30, 20191 Comment

Last November I decided to have a day out photographing for wildlife, but rather than head out into the countryside of East Anglia, I instead headed in to London. This may seem like a strange place go for wildlife, but there is plenty to be seen and much of it relatively easy to approach. I…

A July walk around Wat Tyler Country Park

Cricket, Essex, heteroptera, hymenoptera, insect, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 4, 2018Leave a comment

Back in late July the heatwave was in full swing, which had limited the amount of wildlife on show as the hot sun and dwindling water levels put pressure on many species. The crickets and grasshoppers were doing well and early one morning this speckled bush cricket seemed determined to pose for me. Its long…

Essex, insect, odonata, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeJuly 28, 2016Leave a comment

The Southern Migrant or Blue Eyed Hawkers have appeared again at Wat Tyler Country Park. Here is a statement that needs reading before going any further. We are pleased to say that the Southern Migrant Hawker dragonfly has been seen once again in Wat Tyler Country Park. Due to issues in previous years with the…

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST – if you share any Southern migrant hawker sightings from Wat Tyler CP please link/post the bold text below Please forgive the possibly lecturing tone to the below, it is hard to write something, like this without it coming out that way! 🙂 In 2013 after sighting this dragonfly species in…

Manadrin Duck with ducklings

bird, London, pigeon, Regents Park, waterfowlBy Neil-UKWildlifeJune 9, 2013Leave a comment

Yesterday I was in London with Jack Perks, a fellow wildlife photographer, when we came across this mandarin duck and her ducklings next to Regents canal. I got the wide angle out for a few shots too. In Regents Park we came across this Egyptian goose. And this wood pigeon.

Fox in the Frost

Essex, fox, mammal, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeJanuary 20, 20131 Comment

Before all this snow arrived, I went for a walk around a frosty and sunny Wat Tyler Park, where I came across a fox hunting for food. I only managed one shot as it was partly hidden by bushes most the time, and between me and the sun, but I quite like it.

Magpie Pica pica

bird, crow, Essex, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeJanuary 13, 2013Leave a comment

Here are a few shots of a magpie from a couple of months ago. These are quite wary birds and Ive never really managed a good shot of one, but I was reasonably happy with these.

Alien Species in Britain: Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea)

Alien Species, bird, waterfowlBy Neil-UKWildlifeDecember 23, 201210 Comments

The Ruddy Shelduck originates from Southern Europe, North Africa and South and Central Asia (with some populations wintering in South East Asia). It is a large rusty orangey brown duck, 64cm in length and with a wingspan of 133cm. The male is slightly larger the female and weighs 1.4kg to her 1.2kg (Robinson, 2005). The…

Giant Horsefly – Tabanus

Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, insect, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeDecember 14, 2012Leave a comment

Back in June, I came across this Giant Horsefly (Tabanus sp.) They lay their eggs on pond margins where their larvae live. I photographed a larva last year. I got a head on shot too. They thankfully (for us) tend to leave humans alone and tend bite horses and cows.
