A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to photograph a male adder.
He wasn’t alone, as there was a female there trying to bask nearby and he was paying her lots of attention, crawling over her and smelling her with his tongue.
And sometimes nudging her in the head.
Though the vegetation limited the quality of the photographs by making it hard to get a clear shot or good angle, it was fascinating to watch the male try his best, sliding over her and vibrating his body against hers to try get her ‘in the mood.’
Unfortunately for him she did not seem interested in her everytime I was observing over the 2 days. She just laid there trying to bask.
