Birds in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

bird, Lanzarote, waderBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 29, 20111 Comment

On our first day on Lanzarote, we went for a walk South along the town in which we were staying: Puerto del Carmen. There were a few waders around the rocks at the southern end of Los Pocillos beach the most surprising of which was a whimbrel.  I manged to get fairly close. I was…

Lanzarote Whimbrel

I’ve been away (with the blog on automated posting) in Lanzarote and Hve lots of photos to edit and post on here from there and elsewhere before. But for now here is a photo of a bird I say fairly often on the rocky shores: a whimbrel.

Pheasant close up

bird, Gamebird, Norfolk, Strumpshaw fenBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 25, 2011Leave a comment

While at Strumpshaw Fen recently I came across a tame male pheasant. He happily sat there while I took lots of close ups with my 300mm lens. He just sat there as I took photos. He even started to preen.

Pirate spider – Pirata piraticus

Arachnid, Freshwater invertebrates, spidersBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 24, 2011Leave a comment

In June there were a number of pirate spiders Pirata piraticus living on the surface of the ponds so I caught one and placed it on the water surface in a photographic tank. I then got as low angle as possible to maximise reflection and impact of the image. This was the result:

Here is a photo I took in poor light but with my Pentax K-5 and F4 300mm combo. It was taken at ISO 800 and at f5 which meant with minimal noise reduction I got this nice image.

Lesser water boatman nymph

Freshwater invertebrates, heteroptera, insectBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 20, 20111 Comment

Back in June I found a nicely coloured lesser water boatman nymph. I had never seen one with such colouration before. So I took photos from a number of angles in my photographic aquarium.

More springwatch Badgers

badger, Essex, mammalBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 18, 20113 Comments

I posted before on the badgers from springwatch, which I was fortunate enough to go photograph. Phil even set up his suspended peanut butter sandwich technique so I could get some photos of the badgers without their nose to the ground. Some people on the springwatch message boards were worried that the badgers would hurt…

Tame red fox 2

Essex, mammalBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 16, 20111 Comment

Some more photos of the the tame red fox. These were all taken with my Pentax DA*300mm F4, which did well in the cloudy conditions and poor light.

Here is a quick post of a young pheasant close up.

Tame red fox

UncategorizedBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 14, 2011Leave a comment

I was lucky enough to recently come across this beautiful red fox. It was thankfully relatively tame, though wary of any movements I made. I got a number of shots I’ll post some more in my next post
