Norfolk hawker and other wildlife from RSPB Strumpshaw Fen

Arachnid, insect, Norfolk, odonata, spiders, Strumpshaw fenBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 5, 20151 Comment

Back in June I had visit to RSPB Strumpshaw Fen in Norfolk, one of my favourite reserves. I decided to do an anti clockwise loop and started in the area near the ‘Doctors Garden.’ The sun decided to disappear behind the cloud as I arrived around lunchtime, so I wasn’t holding up much hope of…

Cardinal Beetle and mosquito

Diptera, insect, Norfolk, Strumpshaw fenBy Neil-UKWildlifeJune 27, 2013Leave a comment

The nettle beds at Strumpshaw Fen where especially fruitful. This cardinal beetle, the red headed species Pyrochroa serraticornis, posed on the nettles for a bit, though the wind made shots a bit more tricky! The mosquitoes were eating us alive, but i did get a nice shot of one!

Swallowtail butterflies at Strumpshaw Fen

butterflies, insect, Norfolk, Strumpshaw fenBy Neil-UKWildlifeJune 23, 20131 Comment

Last weekend I popped up to Strumpshaw Fen for a couple of days. One of the target species was the swallowtail butterfly. I didn’t manage a good top down angle photo of one with undamaged wings though sadly. One of those with a damsged wing however sat on the floor ignoring everyone photographing it so…

Scarce chaser at Strumpshaw fen

insect, Norfolk, odonata, Strumpshaw fenBy Neil-UKWildlifeJune 17, 2013Leave a comment

Last weekend I spent a couple of days at Strumpshaw Fen RSPB reserve enjoying the invertebrates there. One of them was the scarce chaser dragonfly, Libellula fulva. One was tolerant enough for my 35mm wide angle to be used. Though a bit awkwardly angled for the ‘traditional’ top down shot, as was this maturing male.

Pheasant close up

While at Strumpshaw Fen recently I came across a tame male pheasant. He happily sat there while I took lots of close ups with my 300mm lens. He just sat there as I took photos. He even started to preen.

Willow emerald damselfly at Strumpshaw Fen

insect, Norfolk, odonata, Strumpshaw fenBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 12, 2011Leave a comment

Last weekend I had a trip up to Norfolk, which included a visit to Strumpshaw Fen. I had heard that willow emeralds (Lestes viridis) were present and went to have a look. As I crossed thr railway I ran into Dick who runs Rare bird alert and was the person who reported them the previous…
