Today at Rainham Marshes there was a little grebe sitting on its nest.
I sat on the boardwalk near the nest and took a number of photos.
Apparently to start with she was constantly on and off the nest, possibly due to the people walking past (its the only path/boardwalk you can walk along so no avoid it), but she soon settled. (I say she, it could be the male or both!) She got off briefly while I was there and covered the eggs perfectly, you wouldn’t know the eggs were there!
I got a few different views during my two visits during the day.
It has a delightfully composed and self-satisfied smile. Hand’t known before that any birds cover their eggs while they go away. Clever blankets.
Lovely pictures. We have a pair on the lake near my house. Lovely bird to watch. They were a bit elusive but with the hatching of flies they are dancing…
