When visiting Lanzarote last year I was fortunate enough to see a Hoopoe, Upupa epops, on the grass lawn of a hotel in Costa Teguise. I took some photos and crept closer, then took so more and crept a bit close and so on. And it just stayed where it was feeding away.
As I got closer I laid down on the grass of this 4 star hotel, (I risked to be asked to leave, but I could get some photos before they did!) to get a nice low angle.
Eventually I got so close I had to back off to fit the head and tip of the crest in the frame using my 300mm lens!
Not an encounter I’ll forget in a hurry!
Reminds me of dinosaurs.
Have a very happy Christmas – and best wishes for a wonderful new year.
