Well its taken longer than planned, but here is the best of my photos from July to December 2014 In July I had a close encounter with a giant horselfy Tabanus sp. Thankfully they are not usually interested in biting humans! I visited Thursley common on the way to New Forest and after disappointing amount…

Aquatic caterpillars

Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, insect, moths, Uncategorized, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeAugust 9, 2014Leave a comment

Some recent posts on a Facebook page and on the Wild About Britain forum, as well as finding some aquatic caterpillars on some of the currently daily pond dips at work, made me realise I never posted (or even uploaded) my photos of these interesting creatures. These are the caterpillars of one of the china…

Kingfisher at RSPB Rainham

UncategorizedBy Neil-UKWildlifeMay 25, 2014Leave a comment

A few weeks ago a kingfisher pair were nesting in front of the Marshland discovery zone hide at RSPB Rainham. I had yet to get a photo of a kingfisher that didn’t have something seriously flawed about it so I headed to the hide to get some shots. There were a couple of issues though…

I got a Text today from the wonderful Howard Vaughan informing me that there was a pair of Black Winged Stilts at RSPB Bowers Marsh. They are the first seen in the UK in 2014 I have been told. I was fortunately about to go on my lunchbreak, so popped over to bowers where a…

Dear Stephen Metcalfe MP, As I am sure you are aware there is a debate the badger cull on 13 March and a vote on whether the Government’s culling policy should continue. Even a glance at what happened last years cull, with the failure to cull enough badgers, even with its extensions and the governments…

Selfish dog owners strike again

UncategorizedBy Neil-UKWildlifeNovember 1, 20131 Comment

There has recently been a campaign in a local park to try and get dog owners to pick up their dogs mess, rather than leave it on the path or in meadows where people and children may come across it. A big poster campaign involved putting up lots of signs/posters, many of which quickly ended…

Bupleurum tenuissimum – Slender Hare’s-ear and Puccinia bupleuri rust fungus

UncategorizedBy Neil-UKWildlifeAugust 25, 2013Leave a comment

Last weekend I met up with some friends and had a walk around Wat Tyler CP. On the sea wall we found a scarce species of plant: Bupleurum tenuissimum, theSlender Hare’s-ear. On its leaves was the rust fungus Puccinia bupleuri, which is only recorded from a handful of UK sites.

Southern migrant hawker Aeshna affinis at Wat Tyler Park, Essex 2013

Essex, insect, odonata, Uncategorized, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeAugust 2, 20132 Comments

Regular blog readers will know I am lucky enough to frequent a place that last year had daily sightings of the recently colonising Southern migrant hawker Aeshna affinis, in fact its possible I spent more time than anyone else observing them last year. A month or 2 ago I was emailed about them by James…
