A quick photo of a scarce emerald damselfly, the last one I saw this year.

National Dragonfly Week 2013: Scarce Emerald damselfly

Essex, Factfile, insect, odonata, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeJuly 24, 2013Leave a comment

Day 2 of my dragonfly species a day to celebrate the British Dragonfly Society’s National Dragonfly week. Today we’ll look at the Scarce emerald, Lestes Dryas Like other emerald damselfly species they are emerald green in colour and they have a habit of sitting with their wings at 45 degrees to the body, rather than…

Scarce swallowtail Iphiclides podalirius

butterflies, Greece, insect, KefaloniaBy Neil-UKWildlifeJuly 22, 2013Leave a comment

On my visit to Kefalonia last May, I wanted to get a photo of a scarce swallowtail. I had some bad photos of a tatty specimen from my visit a few years ago and found another on a visited to Lake Avithos earlier in the holiday, but on this visit one decided to sit a…

Scarce chaser at Strumpshaw fen

insect, Norfolk, odonata, Strumpshaw fenBy Neil-UKWildlifeJune 17, 2013Leave a comment

Last weekend I spent a couple of days at Strumpshaw Fen RSPB reserve enjoying the invertebrates there. One of them was the scarce chaser dragonfly, Libellula fulva. One was tolerant enough for my 35mm wide angle to be used. Though a bit awkwardly angled for the ‘traditional’ top down shot, as was this maturing male.

Scarce emerald damselfly Lestes dryas

Essex, insect, odonata, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeJuly 29, 2012Leave a comment

The rubbish weather so far this summer has stopped me getting much in the way of macro shots at all, let alone of the local speciality, the scarce emerald damselfly. However the improved weather last week did let me get the following.

Scarce emerald damselfly nymph Lestes dryas

Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, insect, odonata, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeJune 4, 20121 Comment

Last week a realised that the emerald damselflies would soon be emerging and there would not be nymphs around for much longer. This because despite hatching in March/April, they only take a matter of weeks to grow and emerge as adults, so the time available to photograph them is not very long. I managed to…

Scarce chaser dragonfly, greek marsh frog, mammoth wasp and beautiful demosielle

amphibian, insect, odonataBy Neil-UKWildlifeMay 13, 2012Leave a comment

On a trip to a reservoir in kefalonia we saw some interesting stuff. There were scarce chaser dragonflies flying around. There were greek marsh frogs. This mammoth wasp was on a flower. A blue tailed damselfly perched nicely. As did this beautiful demoiselle.

Large skipper, wood mouse and scarce emerald

butterflies, Essex, insect, mammal, rodent, Uncategorized, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeDecember 9, 2011Leave a comment

Some more photos from that day back in June when I got the marbled white butterfly. I got another butterfly species, a large small skipper. There was plenty of goats rue in flower. I spotted this wood mouse. And a male scarce emerald damselfly.
