Dragonflies and damselflies at Crockford stream and Hatchet pond

insect, New forest, odonataBy Neil-UKWildlifeJuly 12, 20131 Comment

On Tuesday I visited one of my favourite sites, Crockford Stream. The site is amazing for dragonflies and damselflies, including golden ringed dragonflies. The site is also a good one for the rare southern damselfly. It was good to see a few tandem pairs of these great little blue damselflies. The keeled skimmers were in…

Common Backswimmer Notonecta glauca

Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, heteroptera, insect, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeJanuary 25, 2013Leave a comment

Here a few shots of a common backswimmer Notonecta glauca. This individual has flipped over to the right way up at the surface in preparation to fly off. I took them a couple of years ago so they are not my best shots I’ll have to blog more about these amazing insects later on.

Common lizard on a reed and others at Rainham Marshes

amphibian, bird, Essex, heron, Reptile, RSPB RainhamBy Neil-UKWildlifeDecember 20, 2012Leave a comment

On visit to RSPB Rainham Marshes in April I saw 2 stoats, one of which was right in front of me, but I couldn’t get a clear shot of it in the reeds and grass. There was a silver lining however, as it scared one of the common lizards up into the reeds, where it…

Common lizard Zooteca vivipara

A few photos of common lizards I took a couple of a juvenile months ago.

Backswimmer nymph and smooth newt tadpole

amphibian, Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, heteroptera, insect, newt, wat tyler cp, water boatmanBy Neil-UKWildlifeOctober 12, 2012Leave a comment

A couple from back in April. Thus smooth newt tadpole was fully developed so must have overwintered as a tadpole. There were also a number of small backswimmer (Notonecta) nymphs.

Migrant hawker and common darter dragonflies at London Wetland Centre

insect, London, odonata, WWT London wetland centreBy Neil-UKWildlifeOctober 7, 2012Leave a comment

Some more photos from the London Wetland Centre, this time of the dragonflies. There were loads of migrant hawkers about. Also I photographed this common darter.

Common sandpiper and sandwich tern in Puerto del Carmen marina

bird, Lanzarote, waderBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 23, 2012Leave a comment

Some more Lanzarote photos, this time from Puerto del Carmen marina. On the rocks I spotted a common sandpiper. Collared doves were all over the island, but only a few posed for me. There was a sandwich tern hunting over the marina too.

Wood Mouse

mammal, rodent, Surrey, Thursley commonBy Neil-UKWildlifeJuly 17, 20121 Comment

On a recent visit to Thursley Common, which was sadly pretty unproductive for invertebrates, we found this wood mouse which was feeding on grass seeds near the picnic area. It seemed unfazed by the humans around it but wouldn’t quite come out enough to pose. We all waited for a good 20 or 30mins and…

2 tailed common lizard at RSPB Rainham Marshes

Essex, Reptile, RSPB RainhamBy Neil-UKWildlifeJune 17, 20122 Comments

I paid a visit to Rainham Marshes today as the weather forecast seemed OK, if a bit windy.  The wind pretty much ruled out any serious macro, except for larger stuff on the boardwalks and fences.  Around the bird woodland boardwalk there were plenty of common or viviparous lizards. However this one was a bit…

Common toads by a loch – Bufo bufo

amphibian, Cairngorm, Scotland, toadBy Neil-UKWildlifeJune 2, 2012Leave a comment

Some pics from the Cairngorms now. Most people stick to the grouse and other highland specialties when in the the Cairngorms but I can’t resist a good toad photograph and at this loch there were 100s! They were in the water and on the paths. There were a few mating pairs. I I couldn’t resist…
