Common lizard on a reed and others at Rainham Marshes

amphibian, bird, Essex, heron, Reptile, RSPB RainhamBy Neil-UKWildlifeDecember 20, 2012Leave a comment

On visit to RSPB Rainham Marshes in April I saw 2 stoats, one of which was right in front of me, but I couldn’t get a clear shot of it in the reeds and grass. There was a silver lining however, as it scared one of the common lizards up into the reeds, where it…

2 tailed common lizard at RSPB Rainham Marshes

Essex, Reptile, RSPB RainhamBy Neil-UKWildlifeJune 17, 20122 Comments

I paid a visit to Rainham Marshes today as the weather forecast seemed OK, if a bit windy.  The wind pretty much ruled out any serious macro, except for larger stuff on the boardwalks and fences.  Around the bird woodland boardwalk there were plenty of common or viviparous lizards. However this one was a bit…

Bearded tits, stonechat reed buntings and dunnock

bird, Essex, finch, RSPB Rainham, thrush, tit, waterfowlBy Neil-UKWildlifeFebruary 26, 20122 Comments

When you take up wildlife photography there are certain bird species you want to photograph. Hoopoes are on most people’s lists, if hard to get in the UK. Bitterns are another and one, I’ve only photographed twice and not particularly well. Another is the bearded tit or reedling. I had seen them at Rainham before…

Marsh frogs, grass snake, common lizard and wasp spider

amphibian, Arachnid, Essex, Reptile, RSPB Rainham, spidersBy Neil-UKWildlifeAugust 28, 20111 Comment

My final post from Rainham.  The ‘other stuff.’ We saw 2 grass snakes, one of which I photographed. There were also a few wasp spiders, including one in a photographable position I got some nice photos of marsh frogs too And a nice one of a common lizard on the boardwalk.

Migrant Hawker in flight

Essex, odonata, RSPB RainhamBy Neil-UKWildlifeAugust 27, 20111 Comment

While at Rainham Marshes we noticed a fair few male migrant hawkers patrolling territories.  The light wasn’t great and neither was the angle from the boardwalks so we didn’t bother with them.  But then we found a spot where we could get to their level with the sun behind us, only for the sun to…

Rainham RSPB – Water rail with chicks and other birds

bird, Essex, RSPB Rainham, UncategorizedBy Neil-UKWildlifeAugust 25, 2011Leave a comment

On Sunday, Adam and I headed to Rainham RSPB reserve and walked along the boardwalk to the dragonfly sculpture where Brenda, who works at the reserve, was looking for bearded reedlings/tits.  While waiting and chatting I spotted something run along the edge of the reeds – moorhen or water rail?  Turned out it was a…
