bird, London, pigeon, Regents Park, waterfowlBy Neil-UKWildlifeJune 9, 2013Leave a comment

Yesterday I was in London with Jack Perks, a fellow wildlife photographer, when we came across this mandarin duck and her ducklings next to Regents canal. I got the wide angle out for a few shots too. In Regents Park we came across this Egyptian goose. And this wood pigeon.

Little grebe on a nest Tachybaptus ruficollis

bird, Essex, RSPB Rainham, waterfowlBy Neil-UKWildlifeApril 28, 20132 Comments

Today at Rainham Marshes there was a little grebe sitting on its nest. I sat on the boardwalk near the nest and took a number of photos. Apparently to start with she was constantly on and off the nest, possibly due to the people walking past (its the only path/boardwalk you can walk along so…

long tailed duck video

bird, Cairngorm, Scotland, video, waterfowlBy Neil-UKWildlifeMarch 28, 2013Leave a comment

Yesterday we went up to the southern shore of the Moray Firth and found this female long tailed duck. I took some photos which will come later and some video, which I’ve put together into this video in iMovie: long tailed duck from Neil Phillips on Vimeo.

Playing with Pentax Q and DA300mm

bird, Essex, warbler, wat tyler cp, waterfowlBy Neil-UKWildlifeFebruary 6, 2013Leave a comment

The weather was meant to be sunny this morning: it wasn’t at 8.30am when I was trying out the new set up! (my Pentax Q and DA*300mm.) I was shooting 1/50th to about 200th second at 1680mm on a tripod. I got some ok results though considering most of these are cropped too. Female wigeon.…

Alien Species in Britain: Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea)

Alien Species, bird, waterfowlBy Neil-UKWildlifeDecember 23, 201211 Comments

The Ruddy Shelduck originates from Southern Europe, North Africa and South and Central Asia (with some populations wintering in South East Asia). It is a large rusty orangey brown duck, 64cm in length and with a wingspan of 133cm. The male is slightly larger the female and weighs 1.4kg to her 1.2kg (Robinson, 2005). The…

On a trip to Richmond Park in october I got my best shots of the species yet. I got a number of the males. And some of the females.

Mallard and redpoll in Wat Tyler Park

bird, Essex, finch, wat tyler cp, waterfowlBy Neil-UKWildlifeOctober 30, 2012Leave a comment

On a quick walk this morning, the first one with sun for a while, I spotted this mallard on a pond. I rather liked the reflection. Another nice surprise was a few redpolls, something I had never seen in the park.

Moorhens

bird, London, waterfowl, WWT London wetland centreBy Neil-UKWildlifeOctober 6, 2012Leave a comment

Last weekend I popped into the London Wetland Centre in Barnes. There were lots of captive waterfowl to see as ever, but also lots of moorhens running in and around the enclosures. One was on the wall of the eider enclosure Before jumping down. There were plenty feeding around on the grass and I got…

Eider

bird, Northumberland, Seahouses, waterfowlBy Neil-UKWildlifeOctober 5, 2012Leave a comment

Back in March I popped into Seahouses on the way back from Scotland, to photograph the resident eiders there and got my best shots yet of this species. A male posed nicely in the harbour. And a group came close outside the harbour wall. The female posed nicely too.

Crested tit, coal tit, chaffinch, goldeneye and red squirrel

bird, Cairngorm, finch, Scotland, tit, waterfowlBy Neil-UKWildlifeApril 13, 2012Leave a comment

Carrying on with my photos from Scotland, I took a number of small bird photos in Cairngorms. I got one good photo of a crested tit, which I had to crop quite heavily. The siskins stayed too far away as well. I got a couple of ok shots though. As always in Scotland, the were…
