Striped emperor dragonfly nymph and Water stick insect close ups

Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, heteroptera, insect, odonata, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 28, 2012Leave a comment

Yesterday I had a aquarium photography session. A 4mm long emperor dragonfly nymph turned up with this rather nice striped colouration. I have only seen this colouration once before, again it was an emperor, but that one was over a cm if memory serves. The one yesterday let me get one good side on shot.…

Magpie, Crow and Jay

bird, crowBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 27, 2012Leave a comment

A few shots from back in the summer. Some bread had been thrown on the floor and I noticed some magpies hanging around. So I settled down in the shade nearby and waited. Corvids are usually wary and there is no exception at Wat Tyler Park so I had to stick on the teleconvertor and/or…

Common sandpiper and sandwich tern in Puerto del Carmen marina

bird, Lanzarote, waderBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 23, 2012Leave a comment

Some more Lanzarote photos, this time from Puerto del Carmen marina. On the rocks I spotted a common sandpiper. Collared doves were all over the island, but only a few posed for me. There was a sandwich tern hunting over the marina too.

Trumpeter finch (Rhodopechys githaginea) in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

bird, finch, LanzaroteBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 16, 2012Leave a comment

Last October I had a holiday in Lanzarote, where I saw lots of interesting wildlife, much of which posed for some photos. One species that took a bit of work to get a photo of was the trumpeter finch Rhodopechys githaginea. This species feeds on seeds and early some mornings could be found in small…

A few shots from last October, of a a nearly full grown smooth newt tadpole. I placed some leaves in the aquarium and let it move around, and got some pleasing shots.

Haliplus water beetle larva and phantom midge larva

beetles, Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, insect, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 10, 2012Leave a comment

A couple of Pond creature photos, taken with my aquarium set up a while back. Both of these are under 1cm long and required the use of extension tubes for grater magnification. First up this Haliplus water beetle larva. And a couple of phantom midge larvae close ups

Egg laying and mating ruddy darters

Essex, insect, odonata, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 9, 20121 Comment

A couple of photos from one of dragonfly chasing lunch breaks. As well as the migrant hawkers, there is an abundance of ruddy darters at Wat Tyler CP. I’ve seen many tandem egg laying pairs, but they move pretty fast as the male whips the female down to lay an egg. I took a few…

Adder Vipera berus photos

ReptileBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 7, 20122 Comments

I managed some nice photos of a young adder this morning. It posed well, didn’t move, but as always with these snakes something wasn’t great, the light. It was a sunny morning but this snake was in the shade and I ahd to resort to flash. My flashgun batteries were dead so I had to…
