Pirate spider close up

Arachnid, Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, spiders, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeFebruary 23, 20132 Comments

Some photos taken using my photographic aquarium of a pirate spider Piraticus sp. This spider can be found around and sometimes on the surface of ponds. This one was flashing its fangs while on the water. This species should not be confused with the much larger raft spiders. This is another species to blog in…

Lesser water boatman

Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, heteroptera, insect, water boatmanBy Neil-UKWildlifeFebruary 9, 20131 Comment

Just a quick post and photo. I’ll have to blog about these cracking little bugs one day, but for now here is a a pic of a lesser water boatman.

Water louse Asellus aquaticus

crustacean, Essex, Factfile, Freshwater invertebrates, Isopod, wat tyler cp, water louseBy Neil-UKWildlifeJanuary 31, 20134 Comments

Regular readers will know I photograph pond creatures on a fairly regular basis, but up until today I have never managed a shot I’m happy with of a Water louse Asellus aquaticus. I catch them on most pond dips, but because they are so common, combined with the fact they have the habit tucking themselves…

Diving beetle larva covered in Vorticella ciliate

beetles, Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, insect, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeJanuary 20, 2013Leave a comment

Another quick photo post, this time of a diving beetle larva. This beastie is famous for being a ferocious predator, sometimes attacking prey bigger then itself with its large pincer like mouthparts. They even eat each other! If you look closely you can see its covered in what looks like white fuzz. These are another…

Shore bug – Chartoscirta cincta

Freshwater invertebrates, heteroptera, insectBy Neil-UKWildlifeOctober 8, 2012Leave a comment

Along with the semi-aquatic true bugs the pond skaters, Water crickets and water measurers, there is another type: the shore bugs. These are the least aquatic of the semi aquatic bugs, often found in the marginal vegetation around water bodies. I caught this one in a reedy pond and photographed in my photographic aquarium It…

Pond creature photography set up

Freshwater invertebratesBy Neil-UKWildlifeJanuary 9, 20126 Comments

I will post properly on this at some point but here is a photo of one of my pond creature photography set ups It consists of a camera with macro lens (in this case Pentax K-5 and 100mm macro) with optional extension tubes, a small aquarium and a flash with diffusion off camera, in this…

Lesser water boatman nymph

Freshwater invertebrates, heteroptera, insectBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 20, 20111 Comment

Back in June I found a nicely coloured lesser water boatman nymph. I had never seen one with such colouration before. So I took photos from a number of angles in my photographic aquarium.

Freshwater invertebrates, Uncategorized, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeAugust 4, 20114 Comments

Ive been catching up on some editing, especially on my pond photos. I got my best shots of a soldierfly larva, possibly Stratiomys sp. Not the prettiest of animals! Also in the same batch were these of the brackish water prawns.
