Some more of the pond photos from January. Most of these have had some dust and dirt cloned out of them and a couple, notably the following photo, has had the background touched up. The first photos are of a water louse or slater.
They are the aquatic relative of the woodlouse.
They are often found in pairs. The male clings to the female until she sheds here skin, which is the only time he can mate with her.
Next up is this ‘bloodworm’ which is a chironomid midge larva.
One of the easiest creatures to see in a pond are the diving beetles. This is one of the medium sized species, called Rhantus suturalis.
The larvae look quite different. I think this larva is of one of the Agabus sp.
Finally, here is one of the case building caddisfly larvae.
