Pond skaters on New Forest river

Freshwater invertebrates, heteroptera, insect, pond skaterBy Neil-UKWildlifeOctober 27, 2013Leave a comment

While in the New Forest by a river I spotted one of the large pond skater or water strider species on a river. So I tried out the DA*300mm, with extension tubes on for closer focus distance and attached the flash to increase the shutter speed in the poor light. These photos were the result.

Pond life collage

Freshwater invertebratesBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 23, 20133 Comments

As you may have guessed from recent posts I have had a few goes at shooting pond creatures with a white background. They great thing about these images is it is easy to play around with them and make things like a make a collage of them. Here is my first attempt:

Some more white background photos, this time of the aquatic predator, a water scorpion Nepa cinerea.

Best of my pond creature photos

beetles, Caddisfly, Ephemeroptera, Freshwater invertebrates, heteroptera, insect, odonata, water boatman, water louseBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 15, 20134 Comments

To celebrate the launch of the Freshwater Habitats Trust, I thought I would do a ‘best of’ my pond creature photos (some of which are being used by the FHT). These are a few of the nicer shots I’ve taken. First up, the first photo I was happy with of a four spotted chaser dragonfly…

Phantom midge larva

Diptera, Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, insect, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 12, 2013Leave a comment

Today I’m off to the Launch of the Freshwater Habitats Trust, formerly known as Pond Conservation. I hope to Tweet this evening from the meeting and blog after the event, but to celebrate the launch, here are some phantom midge larva photos. I blogged some of the fascinating things about these brilliant creatures here:

Broad bodied and 4 spotted chasers

Essex, insect, odonata, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeJune 7, 2013Leave a comment

I started today by heading straight to the spot where I saw the emperors emerging, but they were no longer there and just their exuvia were left. Hopefully they got away safely. At lunchtime I managed some shots of broad bodied chasers, a female hovering between egg laying. And a perched male. Yesterday I managed…

Hatching great silver water beetles video

beetles, Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, insect, video, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeMay 30, 20132 Comments

A couple of years ago a golf ball sized clump of white fuzz was fished out of some blanket weed on a pond dip. I had no idea what it was until I spotted the brown snorkel sticking out the water: it was the egg cocoon of the great silver water beetle! Unfortunately it would…

Lesser backswimmers Plea minutissima

Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, heteroptera, insect, wat tyler cp, water boatmanBy Neil-UKWildlifeMay 17, 2013Leave a comment

The Lesser backswimmer Plea minutissima is often overlooked, being quite small (about 3mm long), resembling and often mistaken for a small nymph of the ‘greater’ backswimmer (Notonecta sp.). They are a real pain to photograph, rarely stopping long enough to find such a small creature in the frame, let a alone focus on them! I…

Wandering snail pond snails and mayfly nymphs

Ephemeroptera, Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, insect, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeMarch 6, 20131 Comment

Some from the processing backlog, much of which consists of pond creatures like these. Not my best pond pics, but worth processing. The Wandering pond snail is a common species in ponds. The pond olive mayfly nymph I have blogged about before before
