Last weekend I walked through Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, and the light for once was lovely. While there I had a go at photographing some common gulls. and a HErring gull I tried a herring gull in-flight close up and captured one landing too. Thanks to Marianne Taylor for the gull IDs!

Last weekend I had a trip down to Southend Pier which is a good site for Mediterranean Gulls. When some took off I tried my hand at some flight shots. I also got a Juvenile in flight.

Wood pigeon and gull in flight

bird, Essex, gullBy Neil-UKWildlifeMarch 6, 2013Leave a comment

A few shots from the start of January, on a sunny day in Raphael’s Park. The was not much around and sun was at an awkward angle so tried for some photos of common birds in flight. The woo pigeon came out ok, except for the background! I also tried a few of the black…

Caspian Gull and Marsh harrier

bird, BOP, Essex, gull, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeJanuary 22, 2013Leave a comment

Today at Wat tyler CP I was hunting around for fieldfares to point my DA*300mm + Pentax Q with adapter combo at, but ended up in the hide. When I got there the kind chaps from the RSPB told me there was a caspian gull out on the scrape. It was at least 200 if…

Gull eats seal pup eye

bird, gull, mammal, sealBy Neil-UKWildlifeJuly 23, 20122 Comments

I should probably start this post by warning that there are GRAPHIC images of nature in the raw (please forgive the cliché). It features a gull doing what it does best (scavenging) and what it needs to survive. If you of one of those people that don’t ‘do’ nature, probably best to skip this post!…

Black headed gull breeding colony, Minsmere

bird, gullBy Neil-UKWildlifeMay 10, 2012Leave a comment

Also at Minsmere I went to the hide that is usually good for photographing nesting Avocets. Sadly the water level was so high only a few black headed gulls were left on the remaining tops of the islands. Some were bringing in nesting material.

Argostoli, Kefalonia: yellow legged gull, woodchat shrike and loggerhead turtle

bird, Greece, gull, Kefalonia, ReptileBy Neil-UKWildlifeMay 5, 20125 Comments

On my visit to Kefalonia 2 years ago I spent a half day in the capital Argostoli. In the harbour there were a number of yellow legged gulls. Walking along the shore path I came across the first shrike I had ever seen, a woodchat shrike. The harbour is famous for the tame loggerhead turtle.…

Grey seals and scavenging gulls

bird, gull, mammal, sealBy Neil-UKWildlifeJanuary 31, 2012Leave a comment

Some more shots from Donna Nook. A female seal gets aggressive. A reflection shot. And a nice pair of whiskers! Sadly everywhere there are young being raised, there are are some that don’t make it. But nature is not one to waste and the gulls are quick to take advantage. The greater black gulls are…

Blakeney common and grey seals

bird, Blakeney, gull, mammal, Norfolk, sealBy Neil-UKWildlifeNovember 16, 2011Leave a comment

On Sunday I went up to Norfolk with my friend Dave on a seal photographing day. Our forst stop was the boat trip to Blakeney point, which we just caught after a long search for breakfast. I got some nice shot from the boat using my DA*300mm and sometimes my 1.7x convertor. This common seal…
