Misty Morning at Elmely Marshes

bird, heron, Kent, landscape, mammal, rabbit, Sheppey, waderBy Neil-UKWildlifeFebruary 26, 2013Leave a comment

The morning of my last post when I got the Merlin was quite an atmospheric and misty one. There was bit of a frost around as an egret was hunting along a flooded ditch. There was a nice flock of curlews too. And a rabbit just about posed on the grass.

Little egret Egretta garzetta at Oare Marshes

bird, heron, Kent, OareBy Neil-UKWildlifeJanuary 29, 2013Leave a comment

Yesterday I popped to the KWT Oare Marshes reserve. It was pretty quiet in terms of people and birds. I did see a little egret and I got a shot of it with my K5. I had gone to try out my Pentax Q on the DA*300mm with the adapter but the sun of course…

Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta)and other wildlife in Argostoli, Kefalonia

bird, Greece, heron, Kefalonia, ReptileBy Neil-UKWildlifeDecember 28, 2012Leave a comment

Back in May, while on holiday in Kefalonia, Greece, I headed to Argostoli. It is the capital of the island and has a well know spot near some fishing boats for loggerhead turtle. My photos were a bit better than last time! South of the bridge is Koutavos lagoon. There were a few little egrets…

Titchwell RSPB reserve: little egrets, goldfinch, spotted redshank and gadwall

bird, finch, heron, Norfolk, Titchwell, waderBy Neil-UKWildlifeJanuary 5, 20121 Comment

Before going to Hunstanton for the sperm whale we spent the morning at RSPB Titchwell. We sawa number of birds, including 3 lifers for me: Arctic Redpoll, red throated diver and my first definate bar tailed godwit (which I’ve almost certainly seen before, but never 100% sure it was one). I got some nice photos…

Cattle egret

bird, heron, LanzaroteBy Neil-UKWildlifeNovember 24, 20111 Comment

When I was in Lanzarote on the outskirts of Costa Teguise I finally got a good view of a couple of cattle egrets. They were hunting for grasshoppers in the dry stony habitat that dominates the island.

Rainham RSPB – Water rail with chicks and other birds

bird, Essex, RSPB Rainham, UncategorizedBy Neil-UKWildlifeAugust 25, 2011Leave a comment

On Sunday, Adam and I headed to Rainham RSPB reserve and walked along the boardwalk to the dragonfly sculpture where Brenda, who works at the reserve, was looking for bearded reedlings/tits.  While waiting and chatting I spotted something run along the edge of the reeds – moorhen or water rail?  Turned out it was a…
