Essex, insect, odonata, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeDecember 3, 2013Leave a comment

LAst autumn I managed to get some shots of tandem pair ruddy darters in flight as they were laying eggs. None came out perfect in focus and/or sharpness but they are OK viewed at for web size. I also got a standard perched male shot.

Arachnid, Essex, insect, odonata, spiders, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeNovember 3, 20131 Comment

Last Autumn I came across this scene of a garden spider eating a pair of ruddy darters. I have more from this scene, which I’ll post at a later date.

Black darter dragonflies, emerald damselflies and other odonata at Thursley Common

insect, odonata, Surrey, Thursley commonBy Neil-UKWildlifeJuly 29, 2013Leave a comment

Yesterday I had my annual trip to Thursley Common, the most species rich site for dragonflies and damselflies in the country. I managed some nice photos, including these black darters (my first of the year) which posed for some shots. The black mature males were flighty and I only managed this shot of one. Some…

Some more photos from the London Wetland Centre, this time of the dragonflies. There were loads of migrant hawkers about. Also I photographed this common darter.

Egg laying and mating ruddy darters

Essex, insect, odonata, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 9, 20121 Comment

A couple of photos from one of dragonfly chasing lunch breaks. As well as the migrant hawkers, there is an abundance of ruddy darters at Wat Tyler CP. I’ve seen many tandem egg laying pairs, but they move pretty fast as the male whips the female down to lay an egg. I took a few…

A few photo from Wat Tyler CP during the recent sunny spell. First up a ruddy darter. This wolf spider was warming her egg cocoon in the sun. And this lizard posed for a photo… …before playing peak-a-boo.

British dragonfly and damselfly emergence and flight times

Freshwater invertebrates, insect, odonataBy Neil-UKWildlifeJuly 14, 20123 Comments

A few years ago on my old blog I posted a diagram to show the emergence and flight times of all the British odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) and a seemed to be quite popular. Since then a number of new species have become established in Britain, or are at least well on their way to…

Red veined darter dragonfly, bath white butterfly, ringed plover and swift flying bee

bird, butterflies, butterflies, insect, Lanzarote, odonata, waderBy Neil-UKWildlifeOctober 16, 2011Leave a comment

Day 3 of my trip to Lanzarote I went for a walk along an area in front of the sea wall that had some low scattered scrub. Here I found my first dragonflies of the trip: a red veined darter dragonfly. There were also some bath white butterflies feeding on the limited number of flowers.…
