On day 4 of my trip we were walking along the seafront when I spotted the desert grey shrike calling from a TV aerial. It was way to high up for a photo and we were looking for somewhere to eat. Walking back the other way to head the resturant we fancied I couldn’t believe my luck when I spotted the shrike perched on a post.

It then flew up to its larder (kill cache).

Here it had stashed a gecko, probably an eastern canary gecko (I think its the only species of gecko on Lanzarote) and it decided to eat it right in front of me.

I had always wanted to a) see a gecko and b) see a gecko larder, and here I had one right in front of me using the spines of the plant to rip the leg off a gecko! Doesn’t get much better than that!

After having something to eat it adopted this odd posture.

I also managed to creep a little closer at get some close ups (these are cropped) with out the shrike paying any attention to me.

I then left the bird to its business and went for a nice dinner.
