Video of Emperor dragonfly mobbed by azure damselfly

Essex, odonata, video, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeJuly 14, 2013Leave a comment

A couple of weeks ago I was watching a female emperor dragonfly ovipositing (egg laying) in a pond, when an azure damselfly started mobbing it. I took some video of it happening and 2 other instances and have put them together in the video below.

Emperor dragonfly in flight at Bedfords Park

Bedfords Park, Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, hoverfly, insect, odonata, ostracodBy Neil-UKWildlifeJuly 12, 20131 Comment

Today I popped into Bedfords Park for a break and to have look for red eyed damselflies. But what caught my attention were the many emperor dragonflies spread along the lake margin, each patrolling their territories and scrapping with each other where they crossed paths. Occasionally one would hover, and this one did at a…

Wide angle emperor dragonfly and reed warbler

Essex, insect, odonataBy Neil-UKWildlifeJune 18, 2013Leave a comment

I started off today with a trip into town and had the rest of the morning to head to RSPB West Canvey Marshes. Or so I thought until I hit yet another standstill of traffic in Essex! I didn’t have time to get to Canvey, so I popped into a private reserve instead and found…

Broad bodied and 4 spotted chasers

Essex, insect, odonata, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeJune 7, 2013Leave a comment

I started today by heading straight to the spot where I saw the emperors emerging, but they were no longer there and just their exuvia were left. Hopefully they got away safely. At lunchtime I managed some shots of broad bodied chasers, a female hovering between egg laying. And a perched male. Yesterday I managed…

Emerging Emperor Dragonfly

Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, insect, odonata, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeJune 6, 20131 Comment

Tonight at 9pm, just as I was finishing work, a couple of emerging emperor dragonfly nymphs were spotted on some reeds in a pond. The light was literally non existent as the sun had gone down and it was the end of dusk, so I had to use flash, which combined with the awkward angle,…

Striped emperor dragonfly nymph and Water stick insect close ups

Essex, Freshwater invertebrates, heteroptera, insect, odonata, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeSeptember 28, 2012Leave a comment

Yesterday I had a aquarium photography session. A 4mm long emperor dragonfly nymph turned up with this rather nice striped colouration. I have only seen this colouration once before, again it was an emperor, but that one was over a cm if memory serves. The one yesterday let me get one good side on shot.…

Emperor dragonfly egg laying

Essex, insect, odonata, wat tyler cpBy Neil-UKWildlifeJuly 30, 20122 Comments

More recent photos from Wat Tyler Country Park. This time a female emperor dragonfly which was laying its eggs on some fallen reeds. This angle, although a bit top down, shows the tip of the abdomen in action below the surface. And I tried an in the environment shot too.
