Red squirrel in the Cairngorms

Cairngorm, mammal, rodent, ScotlandBy Neil-UKWildlifeDecember 5, 2013Leave a comment

While in the Cairngorms this March, some friends set me up in a hide early one morning to try and get some shots of a red squirrel. It was something like -7C so I was wrapped up warm, but the light was OK so I waited. Eventually the squirrel came out a few times and…

Snow Bunting Plectrophenax nivali in the snow

bird, Cairngorm, ScotlandBy Neil-UKWildlifeApril 7, 2013Leave a comment

One stop while in the Cairngorms was Cairngorm Mountain. In the car park there you can often find snow buntings, which can be tempted down a bit closer with some seed. It was pretty snowy so I got shots of them on the rocky wall with some snow around.

bird, BOP, Cairngorm, Scotland, videoBy Neil-UKWildlifeMarch 30, 2013Leave a comment

Anyone who has visited Loch Garten will know the nest is some way off from the centre, though cameras and telescopes provided do give good views. Its not so good if you want photos, so I got out the Pentax Q and shot some video of the EJ, the female osprey. This video has been…

Goldcrest

Another pic from yesterday, a goldcrest on the floor.

Reindeer

Cairngorm, deer, mammal, ScotlandBy Neil-UKWildlifeApril 5, 20122 Comments

While not a target species, with them not being 100% wild or native in the strictest sense, coming across the reindeer on the cairngorms was still pretty cool. It was great to see them in an at least semi natural habitat. I tried a different shot too.

Red grouse on the Cairngorms

bird, Cairngorm, Gamebird, ScotlandBy Neil-UKWildlifeApril 1, 20121 Comment

One of the reasons for the lack of recent posts was that I was away in Scotland, in the Cairngorms National Park. I saw lots of new species and will be posting the photos in the near future. My first new species was the red grouse. Not to long after entering the national park this…
