The Northern damselfly or Spearhead Bluet Coenagrion hastulatum is a species found only in the Highlands of Scotland in the UK, so when I was up there this March I headed to a known site for them with my pond net to see what I could find. It turned out to be pretty easy to catch one among the horsetails, with a few larvae in the tray after 2 or 3 sweeps.
I then used my photographic aquarium to get some nice shots of this (based on a Google search) rarely photographed nymph. Note the ‘kink’ in the caudal lamellae (tails) which is distinctive for this species in the UK.
I tried out attaching the Pentax Q with the adapter for a super close up.
